Econ Lectures is a web business startup run by a economics professor. It began because he wanted to give his students some supplemental material, and quickly grew into an idea for an online business. This is a creative way to provide tutoring in his specialty without having to schedule live classes. This way he isn’t trading hours for dollars anymore. He can create the video lectures, and then sell a subscription to view them.
There were two primary needs for this site. One was simple video handling. The second need was to be able to handle membership subscriptions in a way that provided for automatic renewal reminders, PayPal integration, and the ability to restrict certain content for non-paying visitors.
With the integration of VideoPress, they are able to upload their video files from the WordPress admin without having to upload via a third part service. The videos are all in HD, and they will play on every device and web browser including iOS devices. The video width is automatically determined based on the width of the content column. This means that the user doesn’t have to configure anything at upload time.
The membership feature allows the member to manage their account from the website, including renewing their subscription after getting a reminder email when the subscription period expires. This means that econ lectures admins don’t have to keep up with it. Set it and forget it.
